An Ascites Tumor Appearing during the Passage of Eperythrozoon Coccoides in Mice

چکیده

A strain of Eperythrozoon coccoides was maintained in a pure state for 16 months in unsplenectomized Princeton mice by the intraperitoneal injection of parasitized blood, at intervals of 1 to 3 weeks. In the 39th passage three out of five mice developed marked ascites with innumerable neoplastic cells in the peritoneal fluid. By passage of this fluid the tumor cells and the eperythrozoon were transferred together, with the rapid development of ascites and early death of the animals. On continued passage of ascitic fluid and blood from the mice of the 39th successive group both the tumor and the eperythrozoon were ultimately obtained in a pure state. Development of the passaged tumor was uninfluenced by the eperythrozoon but growth of the latter appeared enhanced in the presence of the neoplastic cells. Throughout 50 passages in mice the ascites tumor has not altered in character. The intraperitoneal injection of ascitic fluid was irregularly followed by the appearance of tumor cells in the blood, the rate of the carriage being 26 per cent in sixty-five animals. The subcutaneous and intramuscular injection of the fluid resulted in solid, highly invasive, local growths which did not metastasize. The solid growths proved transferable in series yet after 20 passages still produced the ascites tumor on intraperitoneal injection of their cells.

Agglutination of mouse erythrocytes by Eperythrozoon coccoides.

Erythrocytes from blood of mice infected with Eperythrozoon coccoides for 3 or 4 days agglutinated spontaneously. Washed E. coccoides particles agglutinated washed erythrocytes of uninfected mice. E. coccoides-mediated agglutination of normal mouse erythrocytes would be an excellent system for studies of bacterial adhesion.

Eperythrozoon coccoides. I. Effect on the interferon response in mice.

Eperythrozoon coccoides is a common blood parasite of rodents and the etiological agent of a chronic infection present in many mouse colonies. After primary infection, mice develop a parasitemia and anemia followed by a chronic, latent infection. During the acute phase of infection, mice manifest a striking suppression of interferon production in response to induction with Newcastle disease vir...

Eperythrozoon coccoides. II. Effect on interferon production and role of humoral antibody in host resistance.

Eperythrozoon coccoides was shown to inhibit the interferon response in mice only during the first 3 weeks after acute infection. By 6 weeks the production of interferon in response to Newcastle disease virus returned to a normal level. Antibody to E. coccoides could be demonstrated by three methods: (i) neutralization, (ii) indirect fluorescent antibody, and (iii) gel diffusion. The clearance ...

Antitumor Activity of Prosopis glandulosa Torr. on Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) Tumor Bearing Mice

The antitumor activity of ethanol extract of Prosopis glandulosa Torr. (EPG) was evaluated against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) tumor model in Swiss albino mice on dose dependent manner. The activity was assessed using survival time, average increase in body weight, hematological parameters and solid tumor volume. Oral administration of EPG at the dose of 100, 200 and 400 mg/Kg, significantl...
